Thoracic Kyphosis & Postural Slump
Thoracic kyphosis is excessive rounding of the upper back (T1-T12) caused by chronic slouching, screen slump, and weakness in scapular retractors. This compresses anterior disc margins and overstretches posterior postural muscles.
Common Symptoms
- Burning ache across the mid-to-upper back after 30+ minutes of computer work
- Visible rounding of the upper back accompanied by forward head protrusion ("Tech Neck")
- Difficulty taking a full, deep breath due to restricted ribcage expansion
- Stiffness when trying to sit or stand completely straight
Movements to Avoid
- β Heavy abdominal crunches or sit-ups that pull the ribcage further into flexion
- β Slouching with head propped forward on pillows in bed
Focus on thoracic extension over a foam roller and pec minor doorway stretches. Opening the front of your chest allows the shoulder blades to retract naturally without straining the neck.
Prescribed Exercise Protocol
Side-Lying Thoracic Open Book
Restores upper back rotational range of motion while expanding the anterior chest and costal ribs.
Thoracic Foam Roller Extension & Mobilization
Reverses hunching and Dowagerβs hump by mobilizing stiff mid-thoracic extension segments.
Wall Angels Postural Retractor
Strengthens weak lower and middle trapezius while activating the serratus anterior to correct rounded shoulders.
Cervical Retraction Chin Tucks (McKenzie)
Re-aligns the cervical spine (C1-C7) and strengthens deep neck flexors to relieve forward head tech neck.
Prone Y-T-W Scapular Stabilizers
Clinical physical therapy sequence that builds postural endurance in the scapular retractors and rotators.
Standing Doorway Pec Minor & Anterior Chest Stretch
Opens the anterior shoulder girdle to eliminate forward shoulder pull and restore upright rib posture.
Seated Chair Thoracic Cat-Cow Wave
Quick and discreet thoracic mobilization sequence designed specifically for desk workers and office chairs.
