Cervicothoracic (C7-T1) Junction Strain
The cervicothoracic junction (C7-T1) is the transition between the mobile cervical neck and the rigid thoracic ribcage. It bears tremendous shear force from forward head posture, causing "coat hanger" tightness, burning at the base of the neck, and tension headaches.
Common Symptoms
- Burning "lump" or persistent tightness at the base of the neck where it meets the shoulders
- Tight, rope-like bands in the upper trapezius and levator scapulae muscles
- Tension headaches starting at the base of the skull and radiating behind the eyes
- Stiffness when turning the head side-to-side (checking blind spots while driving)
Movements to Avoid
- β Aggressive head rolling or circular neck cranking
- β Holding mobile phones down in the lap looking straight down for hours
Perform 10 McKenzie chin tucks every 2 hours. Tucking the chin glides the cervical facet joints posteriorly and immediately removes 20+ lbs of shear strain from the C7-T1 junction.
Prescribed Exercise Protocol
Thoracic Foam Roller Extension & Mobilization
Reverses hunching and Dowagerβs hump by mobilizing stiff mid-thoracic extension segments.
Wall Angels Postural Retractor
Strengthens weak lower and middle trapezius while activating the serratus anterior to correct rounded shoulders.
Cervical Retraction Chin Tucks (McKenzie)
Re-aligns the cervical spine (C1-C7) and strengthens deep neck flexors to relieve forward head tech neck.
Levator Scapulae & Upper Trapezius Decompression
Releases the "coat hanger" muscle tension connecting the cervical vertebrae to the superior angle of the shoulder blade.
Prone Y-T-W Scapular Stabilizers
Clinical physical therapy sequence that builds postural endurance in the scapular retractors and rotators.
Standing Doorway Pec Minor & Anterior Chest Stretch
Opens the anterior shoulder girdle to eliminate forward shoulder pull and restore upright rib posture.
